The 29th Street Saxophone Quartet (which consists of
Bobby Watson and
Ed Jackson on altos,
Rich Rothenberg on tenor, and baritonist
Jim Hartog) is much more conservative in style than the other main a cappella sax groups (the
World Saxophone Quartet and
Rova), but although based in the hard bop tradition, it does have its free and explorative moments. Highlights of this generally stimulating CD include
Thelonious Monk's "I Mean You,"
Bud Powell's "Un Poco Loco,"
Charlie Parker's "Confirmation," and
Watson's "Wheel Within a Wheel."
