Although he had been a well-respected trumpeter for over 30 years by 1971, this was Snooky Young's first session as a leader. Actually the LP consists of two separate dates: one features
Young with altoist
Norris Turney, trombonist
Booty Wood and a surprisingly R&Bish rhythm section (which is turned a bit loose on
Pee Wee Ellis' "Hard Boiled Rock") that includes
Richard Tee on piano and organ and guitarist
Cornell Dupree while the flip-side showcases
Turney in 1975 with pianist
Cliff Smalls, guitarist
Billy Butler, bassist
Al Hall and drummer
Mickey Roker. The emphasis throughout is mostly on light swing and ballads with the highlights including "Lil' Darlin'," "My Blue Heaven,"
Turney's "The Seventh Day" and "For All We Know." Nothing all that substantial occurs on this LP (which has yet to be reissued on CD) but it has its moments of interest.
