Recorded near the beginning of his career, this fairly obscure effort by
Nelson Rangell (mostly heard on alto but also playing a little bit of soprano, flute and piccolo) was made for the soon defunct Gaia label.
Rangell, whose alto playing has always been in the
David Sanborn tradition, was already heading in the pop/jazz direction that would soon make him a popular attraction. Backed by rhythm sections that often include John Van Eps on synclavier and bassist
Victor Bailey,
Rangell mostly performs derivative originals in addition to "A House Is Not a Home" (which pales next to
Jackie McLean's searing version) and
Ivan Lins' "To Begin Again." A likable if not very substantial effort.
