In the pre-CD days, the five-album
Motown Story was essential. It includes nearly all of the label's major hits through 1971. What sets this compilation apart from the various greatest hits collections is the between track narration from
Berry Gordy,
Smokey Robinson,
Diana Ross and others. While this feature provides rare insight into the artists' thoughts, it can be somewhat distracting when it segues into the actual songs. Regardless, these 58 songs rank with the greatest pop music of all time.
