Two unrelated quartet sessions taken from Swedish radio broadcasts were released for the first time on this 1989 CD. With pianist
Jan Johansson, drummer
Al "Tootie" Heath and either
Bob Cranshaw or
Roman Dylag on bass,
Duke Ellington's longtime tenor
Paul Gonsalves performs three standards, plus a three-song ballad medley, and
Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis stretches on six numbers. Although it is a pity that they did not play together (their appearances were actually 3 1/2 months apart), both tenors are in top form and "battle" to a draw. Well worth picking up.
