Two unrelated quartet sessions taken from Swedish radio broadcasts were released for the first time on this 1989 CD. With pianist Jan Johansson
, drummer Al "Tootie" Heath
and either Bob Cranshaw
or Roman Dylag
on bass, Duke Ellington's
longtime tenor Paul Gonsalves
performs three standards, plus a three-song ballad medley, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis
stretches on six numbers. Although it is a pity that they did not play together (their appearances were actually 3 1/2 months apart), both tenors are in top form and "battle" to a draw. Well worth picking up.
