Vanguard's Generations of Folk, Vol. 1: Festival of Folk does a nice job illuminating the diversity of the '50s and '60s folk scene. Airy folk-pop classics like "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers and "Don't Let the Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man)" from the Serendipity Singers hold their own against weightier numbers from more politically charged performers such as Pete Seeger ("Bells of Rhymney") and Joan Baez ("The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"). The Kingston Trio provide the requisite Irish folk contingent with "Tom Dooley," Odetta and José Feliciano reinterpret standards, and the Weavers wrap the whole thing up with "Goodnight Irene," resulting in a scant but undeniably classic collection of genre favorites.
