This collection was the first version of the Goldmine/Soul Supply
Parliaments compilation. All 19 of these cuts were recorded during the late '50s (in New Jersey) and '60s (in Detroit) when
George Clinton,
Fuzzy Haskins,
Grady Thomas,
Calvin Simon, and
Ray Davis tried to go the conventional route of making soul records and score hits on both the Golden World and Revilot Records imprints, and before they became the legendary Parliament wing of
Parliament/Funkadelic, or,
P-Funk. This is brilliant, spacy early soul laced with classic traces of hard '50s R&B, some rootsy rock & roll, and doo wop. Three of these cuts that appear as instrumentals, and there's another recorded under a pseudonym as "the Fellows". Don't expect the manic psychedelic craziness from these sides you'd get from the late '60s, but do expect the lyrics to be as out as ever even during this period.
