Album Review

Zydeco's past, present and future were on display during this 1989 session from Richard's Club in Lawtell, Louisiana. The music's glorious tradition was symbolized by Boozoo Chavis, who scored a seminal hit in 1954 with "Paper In My Shoe," then took a hike before returning 30 years later in the mid-'80s and not even missing a beat. His world-weary, invigorating voice and amiable, sly personality were highlighted on such cuts as "Make It to Me," "Deacon John" and "Dog Hill." He concluded the session, while Nathan And The Zydeco Cha-Chas opened the album, doing blistering tunes and infusing their originals with blues and R&B influences but never abandoning the zydeco base.
