Russian violinist
Vadim Repin was born in the city of Novosibirsk in 1971, and gave his first recital performance at the age of 11, taking top honors at the Wieniawski International Competition that very same year. Rising to international fame in 1989 upon winning first prize at the Queen Elizabeth Violin Competition in Brussels,
Repin mounted a solo career which included performances with the
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Sinfonieorchester, Suddeutscher Rundfunk, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre de Lyon, and the NHK of Japan, among many others; his early recordings included the
Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 and
Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2 with
Kent Nagano and the Hallé Orchestra, as well as the
Prokofiev Violin Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2 and Five Melodies with pianist Boris Berezovky. In 1998,
Repin collaborated with
Yehudi Menuhin to record
Mozart's Violin Concertos Nos. 2, 3 and
5.
