Review by Scott Yanow
Pianist George Gruntz took time off from leading his Concert Jazz Band to record the live trio/quartet album Mock-lo-motion. Three of the six numbers feature flügelhornist Franco Ambrosetti, who sounds a bit like Lee Morgan/Freddie Hubbard while being open to more modern improvising, particularly on his own "Annausa" and the complex "Vodka-Pentatonic." Gruntz has an original piano style within the modern mainstream of jazz, with his own fresh chord voicings. With bassist Mike Richmond and drummer Adam Nussbaum pushing him, Gruntz is in top form throughout this set with the up-tempo "Giuseppi's Blues" being a high point of the trio numbers. Read More
