These are his earliest professional sides, made in 1964 for the Folkways label, reissued on CD with a new title, new cover art, and new notes by Hurley himself. Favorites like "The Werewolf Song" and "Captain Kidd" made their first recorded appearances on this dozen-song set, and sound just as new nearly four decades later. Though First Songs (the album's original title) has long been available on CD-R and cassette on a made-to-order basis from Smithsonian/Folkways, whatever commercial distribution the fledgling Locust label can provide should help save Hurley's fans time, trouble, and money.
