Review by Steve Leggett
Ike & Tina Turner's first recordings together were on Sue Records in 1961 and 1962, and this delightful 12-song set captures the best of those sessions. Tina's impassioned vocals explode like dynamite here, only a half-step away from gospel, and with Ike's ragged garage soul guitar backing, these cuts are every bit as exciting as their later, more famous recordings, and fans are missing a lot if they haven't heard this early material. Every track crackles with a rough-hewn gospel intensity, particularly the loose "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "You Should Have Treated Me Right," the slow-building and glorious "So Fine," and the garage gospel mixed with R&B sound of "I'm Fed Up." Ike & Tina actually refined their sound as the decade went on, believe it or not, and these wonderfully raw and vital early recordings are where it all began. Read More
