Billy Strange - Strange Country [Collectables]

by Thom Jurek
Herein lies one of the most aptly titled records to ever come out of Nash Vegas. Billy Strange's Strange Country is full of all sorts of sounds that would make producers on the underground tip go wild today. When it came out back in the '60s, no one knew quite to make of it, with its layers of 6-, 12- and even 8-string guitars, banjos, tambourines, maracas, and what not. Whether it was Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," or Barry Mcguire's "Green Green," or even "Stranger in Your Town," these tunes were plucked, picked, strummed, and beaten out of acoustic guitars and other strings; mandolins played a role too, primarily as percussion instruments. This baby is psychedelic without meaning to be and is a bona fide weirdo classic. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
